Kazimierz Szałas (1900–1928), one of the best navigators in Poland along with Kazimierz Kubala (back then — observer), completed also a piloting course and obtained pilot’s license. He popularized flying at night and celestial navigation. Co-creator of night bomber squadrons in Poland.

He died during the attempt to land at an unlit airport in Baghdad after the flight from Dęblin. Other members of the crew — lieutenant Kazimierz Kalina and Stanisław Kłosinek survived the disaster with only minor wounds.
