Tadeusz Kościuszko’s Fighter Squadron 303 was formed on August 2, 1940 at the Northolt airport near London. The core of the squadron’s personnel was formed by the pilots of squadron 11 and the fighter squadron 112 of Air Force Regiment 1, who in September 1939 fought as members of the Pursuit Brigade.
Up till now it is regarded as one of the best and the most successful fighter formations in World War II. The Squadron started combat missions on September 1, 1940. The Squadron participated in the following missions: Battle of England, fighter assault over France, Raid of Dieppe, protecting convoys, allied raids on Germany, Overlord, fighting flying bombs V1, participation in invasion of Germany.
The Squadron earned its fame thanks to excellent achievements in combat and the book written by Arkady Fiedler titled Dywizjon 303 (Squadron 303).
Among the commanders of the Squadron there were: Zdzisław Krasnodębski, Witold Urbanowicz, Jan Zumbach, Witold Łokuciewski.
