An-24 is a Soviet, narrow-body turboprop, medium range passenger airplane designed by a team headed by Oleg Antonow.
The prototype of the airplane was first flown at the end of 1959. Mass production of the airplane was launched already next year. First version of the airplane had the capacity to take 44 passengers on board. In 1962 performance tests were conducted and in the same year Russian airlines Aeroflot started using these planes for regular flights. To satisfy the needs of the Polish carrier PLL LOT, the Antonow factory designed a version with 48 seats for passengers.
